어제 저녁 룸메이트가 "Motherf**kers!"라며 마치 비명을 지르듯 중얼거렸다. 왜냐고 묻는 내게 BBC에 가보니 헤드라인이 '버지니아 공대 학살범은 한국인'이었다나. 녀석에게 이번 일은 남의 일 같지가 않은 모양이다. 아는 동생들도 몇 그곳을 다니고 있는데다가, 무엇보다 가족이 모두 미국에 있기 때문에 한국인으로서 감수해야 할지도 모를 이런저런 위험이나 불이익이 걱정될 수 밖에 없을테니까. "팔레스타인을 생각해보면 우습다는건 알지만, 정서적으로 연결되어 있는ㅡ'emotionally attached'ㅡ문제라 그런 것 같아. 이건 이웃의 문제니까. (It's about people next door.)"

실은 내게도 아주 남일같지는 않다. 지금은 한국에 있지만 범인이 산다는 버지니아주 페어팩스 카운티 바로 옆 동네에서 수 년 산 경험이 있고, 그곳은 페어팩스까지는 차로 10분, 버지니아 공대까지는 차로 30분 밖에 걸리지 않았다. 고교시절 여친들도 모두 그 동네에 살았고, 토플도 버지니아 공대에서 아슬아슬하게 정시에 도착해 본 기억이 있다. 친구들도 몇 그 학교로 갔고. 이번 사건으로 페어팩스에 옹기종기 모여사는 외교관과 특파원 가족들이 불안해하는 광경도 눈에 선하고, 교포들의 동요도 상상이 간다. 한국인들이 많이 사는 페어팩스의 에넌데일의 한국 노래방이나 레스토랑에선 '걔 저번에 왔었던 애 아냐?'라며 설레발치고 있을 지도 모르지.

어쨌든 안그래도 불안정한 한국인의 지위인데, 더욱 눈치보이고 신경 쓰이겠지. 같은 백인 주류의 다인종 사회 입장인 서구 언론들은 사건에 대해 '범인은 한국인'이라는 것을 전면으로 부각하는 듯하다. 그래, 이번 녀석은 괴물이다. 여자친구를 포함한 두 사람을  총으로 쏴 죽이고ㅡ수정: 무관함이 밝혀졌다ㅡ두 시간 후 탄창을 갈아 끼며 냉정하게 살육을 '실시(execute)'한 녀석이니까. 그 냉정함과 냉혹함은 숫자가 말해준다. 사상 최대의 숫자에 그나마 머리 큰 애들이 모여 있어서 나을 줄 알았던 대학이라는 공간의 상징성까지. 미국을 강하게 만들어준다는 이민을 통한 다양성이란 가치에서부터, 학문의 전당, 총기 소유의 자유 등 여러 가치관들이 무너지고 섞여서 거대한 아노미를 만드는 듯한 모습이다.

하지만, 미국 사회가 교내 총기난사사건을 거듭 겪으면서도 이를 방지하지 못하는 이유에 대한 자기성찰은 턱없이 부족한 듯 하다. 총기사고는 결코 NRA 때문에 총기규제를 강화하는데 실패해서 재발하는 것이 아니다. 이런 문제가 발생할 때마다 미국인들은 세계 최고 수준의 문명국가라는 미국이 결코 안전하지 못한 곳이라는 것을 확인하고 경악한다. 사실 외부의 시각으로 봤을 때엔 인구 수보다 많은 총기가 널려 있는 미국이란 나라는 결코 정상이 아니며, 모두들 태연하게 사는 것 자체가 이해가 가지 않는데도 말이다. (아이러닉하게도 미국인들은 북한을 코 앞에 두고도 태연히 사는 우리를 보면서 고개를 절래절래 젓는다.)

이런 '충격과 공포'를 극복하기 위한 가장 손쉬운 방법은 이 '괴물'을 타자화하는 것이다. 이번 사건 이전까지는 부동의 사상최악의 교내총기사건으로 기록되어 왔던 컬럼바인 고교 총기난사 사건의 경우에 미국은 범인에게서 '괴상망측한 매릴린 맨슨에 심취하고 기성세대는 이해할 수 없는 일인칭 슈팅게임을 즐기던 사춘기의 10대 소년'이라는 '미지의 세계'를 찾아냈다. 무지는 공포를 낳지만, 거꾸로 공포를 정당화하기 위해 부러 무지를 택하는 경우도 있다. 그렇게라도 괴물과 '우리'의 차이점을 발견하지 못한다면, 그야말로 감당할 수 없는 공포의 시작일테니 말이다.

애석하게도 이번 사건의 범인을 타자화하는데에는 그런 복잡한 사적취향의 분석 따위는 동원되지 않았다. '범인은 아시아인'에 이어 '범인은 한국인'으로 게임은 이미 끝났으니까. 미국 대중들은 이번 사건에서 묘하게 막연한 외국인 공포증을 느끼면서도, 내심 이번 사건을 일으킨게 미국인이 아니라는 점에 안도하고 있을 것 같다는 생각이 든다. '그래, 범인은 한국인이야. 그럼 그렇지.'라면서. 사실 이런 태도는 외국인 범죄에 대한 한국인의 태도와 크게 다를 것도 없다.

이젠 범인 조승희의 방에서 맨슨 DVD가 나오든 안데르센 동화책이 나오든 일본 애니 컬렉션이 나오든 말콤X전기나 꾸란, 심지어는 KKK의 하얀 고깔옷이 나와도 매스컴에는 아무런 의미가 없는 일이 될 것 같아 보인다. 우리가 그토록 믿고 지켜온 '개인의 고유성'이란 가치는 인류 역사상 가장 다양성을 옹호해왔다고 홍보해온 미국에서조차 인종이란 잣대 앞에 이렇게 허무하게 무너질 뿐이니까. 사실 이번 사건의 원인이 인종과 무관하듯, 인종을 잣대로 타자화를 시도하는 것 역시 본질은 아닐 것이다. 한국인이라는 것은 단지 '매릴린 맨슨을 좋아한다는 것'과 비슷할 정도로만 이질적인 특성일 뿐이니까.

'사상 최악의 교내 총격사건, 범인은 백인'

그러니 컬럼바인때 이런 헤드라인이 나오지 않았다고 불평할 일도 아니다. 하긴, 이런 제목이 그때 단 하나라도 눈에 띄었다면 이런 포스트를 휘갈길 이유도 없었겠지만.

일련의 기사와 포스트들에 달린 댓글들을 보면서 놀랐던 것은, 겁을 잔뜩 집어먹은 한국인들이 그를 '타자화'하고 있다는 것이었습니다. 대개는 '어려서 미국으로 간 그를 과연 한국인으로 보아야 하는가'라는 식의 논지였어요. 그렇다면 도대체, '교포들은 어디에서 자신의 정체성을 찾아야 하는 것인가'라는 의문이 들었습니다. 그리고 '괴물을 만들어낸 것은 과연 누구인가'라는 의문도요.

주말수염반장님// 전 정체성이나 인성, 교육 보다도 대학생이 손쉽게 총을 구할 수 있는 환경이 더 문제라고 봅니다. 물론 모방을 일으킬만한 "전례"들도 그 환경에 포함되어 있다고 믿습니다.

주말수염반장// 그렇죠. 개인의 문제를 민족의 문제로 만드는 오랜 나쁜 버릇이 스스로를 자학하며 궁지로 몰고 있습니다. 시침떼며 그건 인종이 아닌 개인의 문제로 만들며, 한국인이라며 시비거는 미국인들을 그들의 아킬레스건인 '인종주의'로 몰 수 있는 배짱은 없는거죠.

분명 문제의 원인은 미국의 총기 문제에 있습니다만, 아마 언론이나 사람들은 “한국인”이라는 것에 초점을 맞추겠죠. 그게 더 쉽고 편하니까요. 그래서 더 걱정입니다.

그를 타인으로 부터 배척당한 사람으로 보아야할지.. 외로운 사람으로 보아야할지..
스토킹등으로 정신감정까지..
알게 모르게 다른사람에게 도움을 청했을지도 모르죠
그 도움을 외면한 사람들도 있을지도..
어린나이에 미국에 갔어도 그는 여전히 한국인이라는 딱지를 가지고 있고..
언론은 인종을 가지고 뭐라고 하지만 여론은 문제는 인종이 아니라고 했다지요?
그런 시각으로 봤을때 다행이라고 여겨지더군요..
괜시리 죄책감을 느낄 필요가 없어져서요..

쥬델리// 솔직히.. 어린 나이에 미국에 가서 이방인으로 살았다는게 그렇게 동정할만한 일은 아니라고 생각해요. 물론 힘든 부분도 있지만, 그보단 정신질환을 가진 '환자'였다고 보는거죠. 그런 환자는 어느 나라든 어느 사회든 존재하죠, 통계적으로. 총을 쉽게 구할 수만 없었어도 저 정도의 파국은 없었겠죠. 하지만, 역시 지나치게 동정적인 시각 역시 또 다른 '타자화'일 수도 있다고 생각합니다. 개인보다는 제도와 환경적 요인을 봤으면 좋겠어요.

오히려 한국사람들이 범인이 한국 사람인 것에 더 예민해져 과잉반응을 보이는 거 같아요. 대부분의 미국사람들은 괜찮은데 말이죠.

글구 "'범인은 아시아인'에 이어 '범인은 한국인'으로 게임은 이미 끝났으니까."라는 말은 좀 불공평한 스테이트먼트 같네요. 미국 언론계에서는 이번 조승희가 school shooter 패턴에 얼마나 들어맞는지, 왜 그걸 미리 파악하지 못했는지, 학교와 경찰당국이 왜 신속히 대처하지 못했는지에 대해서 논쟁을 벌이고 있는데요.

영주권자와 시민권자는 엄연한 차이가 있습니다. 우리가 보기엔 8살에 미국으로 건너간 사람이 어찌 미국 사람이 아니겠냐 싶겠지만. 과연 조승희가 영주권자(permanent resident from South Korea)가 아닌 미국 시민권자 (Korean-American)였어도 "Shooter is Man from South Korea"란 제목이 뜨면서 그의 출생지가 한국이였다는 것에 지금처럼 관심을 보였을까요? 전 아니라고 생각하는데.. 제가 너무 naive한걸까요?

범인의 신상이 밝혀지자마자 헤드라인을 장식했던건 cnn이고 bbc고 여기고 저기고 한국인이라는 것부터였으니 조금 오버한 감은 있을지라도 불공평한건 아닌 것 같아요. 지금 나오는 기사들은 미국식 '정치적 올바름'을 향한 노력이겠죠. 나쁘게 보면 가식, 좋게 말하면 다양성 유지를 가능하게 하는 최소한의 장치랄까..

그리고 한국에서 더 오버하는건 맞아요. 떠들어봤자 좋을게 없는데, 한 메이저 언론사에선 1면부터 수 페이지를 통으로 할애했더군요. 국제면 구석에 바그다드에서 세 배 가량의 사람이 죽은 폭탄테러 기사가 찌그러져 있었던 것과 대조되게요.

어쨌든 전 조승희가 영주권자인지 시민권자인지엔 별 관심이 없어요. 다만 그가 인종적으로 한국인이고 그 사실과 이번 사건이 결정적인 관련이 있어야 한다고 생각하지 않는 것 뿐입니다.

제가 봐도 미국인들보다 오히려 우리나라사람들이 약간 더 호들갑을 했던 느낌이 잇는 것 같아요..
그나저나 이번 이번 사태에 반응/대응하는 미국인들을 보면서 아무리 인종차별에 온갖 부조리를 안고 있는 미국 양키들도 선진국민이긴 하구나 ... 하는 생각이 들었습니다. (뭐 겉으로만 그런다면 안습이긴 하지만요 ㅜㅜ)
만일 일본이나 중국에서 유사한 사태가 일어났으면... 상상도 하기 싫네요 ^^ (게다가 이 두나라는 얽힌게 많아서 말이죠..)

뭐, 동북아는 2차대전 전의 유럽같은 분위기니까 말이죠.. 미국인들은 참 양면적이에요. 야수성(또는 야만성)과 문명성을 동시에 지닌 '상어'같은 기이한 생물체처럼 느껴질 때가 많습니다.
